Munich roars
Lions are highly conspicuous in Bavaria’s biggest metropolis. They’re everywhere: Not only as official governmental symbols, not only in connection with the Wittelsbacher family as depicted on Otto II’s shield in 1229, not only on 48 different traditional Bavarian coats of arms and, of course most recently as residents of Hellabrunn Zoo. They also stand guard in front of the royal residence in the Residenzstrasse: four bronze beasts that have become, through time, a daily visiting point for many of Munich’s residents who, with an affectionate rub of their hand on the lion's noses, hope for a bit of luck. Directly adjacent to these are two enormous stone-carved creatures that appear to be striding forward. There’s also a famous Munich beer with the name of the felines, as well as a mustard that roars with the power that its name suggests. Oh, and of course a Munich soccer team that faces the challenges on the pitch with leonine power.
