In love, engaged, married

Simply put, whether spring, summer, fall or winter, Hamburg’s residents are in love with water, betrothed and connected for a lifetime: Not only through their nearness to the Elbe River, the port, Inner and Outer Alster, but also at times with rain, ice and snow.

Need some proof? The residences on the shores of the Elbe River, the Elbchaussee, the villas on the banks of the Alster, the elegant Jungfernstieg and, last not least, the port, leviathan and identity of Germany’s largest seaport. The summer is time for sailing, and in winter the frozen Alster plays host to ice skaters. Of recent times, joggers have discovered the circuit around the Outer Alster; traditionally Hanseatic, in contrast, is the walk by the waters of the Elbe in the direction of Blankenese, against the wind of the Baltic Sea and the refreshing rain it often brings with it.
