Between Maxplatz and Rathausufer, Schulstrasse and Bäckerstrasse, a quiet and romantic flair prevails, dominated by the Maxkirche and the small, dreamy Citadell Strasse.
If you’re lucky, you might just catch an organ concert in the beautiful Baroque church. The Citadellstrasse is lined with pretty, neoclassical house fronts, looking much as they did during Heinrich Heine’s day. At its end is the former palace of Count Spee, which houses a part of Düsseldorf’s city museum.
In the picturesque Bäckergasse you will reach a wrought iron gate, behind which is the most romantic park in the city: the old palace park with its stock of stately trees and its idyllic lake.

Moving from Maxplatz and only a few steps along Benrather Strasse is the very lively Karlsplatz, where a market is set up daily. This is the center of Karlstadt and its look has been formed by the numerous 18th century patrician houses.

Cultural institutes, galleries and countless gastronomical possibilities, an active pub scene as well as quiet small streets all go to make up this quarter whose southern section, between Poststrasse and Hohen Strasse, established itself a while ago as an artistic district complete with galleries and antique dealers.
