Art and Fashion
In Düsseldorf, contemporary art has always reflected the latest trends, was and is art in fashion? Fashion itself, on the other hand, was a passion, as a form of costume always ‘in’, whether during the reign of “Jan Willem” (Prince-elector Johann Wilhelm) or during carnival season. Today, it is big business – something that turns the Metropolis on the Rhine, twice a year, into the city of world-famous fashion trade fairs.
Art, on the other hand, here in Düsseldorf, is permanently at home and can be found everywhere: its spiritual center is at the Art Academy (Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Jörg Immendorff); important stars of the photography scene number among its students (Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer); and the city boasts numerous art temples including K20 and K21, the Museum Kunst Palast, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Akademie Galerie, KIT (Kunst im Tunnel) … and more than 100 galleries.
