350 years of Jan Wellem

Long live Jan Wellem. Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg would have celebrated his 350th birthday in the year 2008 – something which he himself would not have stood for, of course. The popular baroque-period prince gave a lot to Düsseldorf and had a lasting impact on the city. His love of live, his knowledge of music and art, his vanities and his stylish interests paved the way for Düsseldorf and virtually laid the genetic foundations for today’s typical Düsseldorf resident: fashion-consciousness and art-awareness as an expression of sheer aesthetic pleasure, demonstrated iconically in the magnificent Königsallee, the annual fashion fairs and the art temples - the K20, K21 and Museum Kunstpalast – and ultimately reflected in the city’s status as a renowned fashion and art center.
