An unexpected place for a kiss: The Berlin Comic Opera, Unter den Linden. Occasion: The premiere of the classic musical by Cole Porter: KISS ME, KATE. When: summer 2008. Reaction: A sensational success. Rousing applause for the outstanding star of the production, Dagmar Manzel. Endless standing ovations for the entire ensemble. At some point, director Barry Kosky had to put end to all the enthusiasm to spare the audience from exhaustion. It took Dagmar Manzel almost half an hour to get to the foyer: she had to shake hands and exchange hugs every step of the way. This one will have a long run – so be sure not to miss it, an absolute must. The Comic Opera is a name with tradition, and somehow KISS ME KATE is a bit of a contrast: the comic element may be missing, but the musical is wonderful: A story that many believe is fantastical nonsense with choreography that is simply unbeatable – and a star who is a truly top-class actress with a voice like a nightingale, in a role that was tailor-made for her.

Simply sensational: Kiss me, Kate.
